If you have questions about your pension payments from the Scheme or need to notify us about a change in your personal details, contact the Scheme administrator.
Increases to your pension once in payment normally take place in April each year. Increases take account of inflation, but different elements of your pension may increase at different rates. If you have been retired for less than a year a proportionate increase is applied.
Information about the actual amount of increase is communicated to you before the increase takes effect, but it can be complex. For example:
- final salary pension built up before 1 January 2008 increases in line with inflation
- final salary pension built up between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2015 increases in line with inflation, up to a maximum of 5%
- career average revalued earnings (CARE) benefits built up from 1 January 2016 to 31 May 2022 increases in line with inflation up to a maximum of 2.5%
- guaranteed minimum pension (GMP) is increases in line with inflation up to a maximum of 3%
If you have a question about increases to your pension in payment, ask the Scheme administrator.
If you die less than five years after starting to take your pension, a lump sum equal to the remaining instalments will be payable (excluding future increases).

Spouse or civil partner | Children |

There are two ways for retired NWPS employees to stay connected with the company:
Be part of our resilience team
If you were a member of the frontline Water or Wastewater teams, you can enrol to our business resilience team to support the business in case of an emergency eg pollution events, major water supply bursts or become a site ranger. You’ll receive regular training so you’re competent and confident to step into these roles when the time comes. If you’d like to be part of this team, please email NWLtraining@nwl.co.uk for more information. We’ll review this on an annual basis and give you the opportunity to stay opted in or to opt out of this team.
Join our retirement associations
Our associations provide a social calendar of activities and events, from day trips to summer and Christmas lunches. Whether you’re in the North or South of England, we have an opportunity for you to make new friends and catch up with old colleagues:
- Northumbrian Water Group Pensioners’ association – for past employees of Northumbrian Water Group in the North of England. It costs £7 a year to join. If you want to join, you can apply here.
- Essex Water Pensioners’ association – for past employees in Essex. Membership is only £3 a year. You can apply here.
Make sure we know who you’d ideally like your pension benefits to be paid to if the worst happens – visit the PRISM member portal to check the details we have on record and update your expression of wish.
How do I . . .
